Application of Damp Proofing Materials and Properties
Damp proofing type of moisture control applied in building walls and floor to prevent moisture. It prevention of moisture from exterior wall and protect from the dampness.Concrete allow the moisture to prevent using the damp materials to protect. It protect both inner and outer wall from dampness.Mainly used in water storage structure to prevent leakage.
Properties
An effective damp proofing material should have the following properties given below
- It should be impervious.
- It should be strong and durable .
- It should be capable of withstanding both live and dead loads without damage.
- It should be stable.
- The material should be reasonably cheap.
Classification of damp proofing materials
The materials commonly used to prevent dampness can be classified into the following four categories listed out below
(1) Flexible material
(2) Semi rigid materials
(3) Rigid materials
(4) Grout materials
- Flexible materials like butyl rubber, hot bitumen (asphalt), plastic sheets, bituminous felts, sheets of lead, copper, etc.
- Semi-rigid materials like mastic asphalt.
- Rigid materials, like impervious brick, stone, slate, cement mortar, or cement concrete painted with bitumen, etc.
- Mortar with waterproofing compounds.
Materials used for damp proofing
The following materials are commonly used for damp proofing they are given below
1.Hot bitumen
2.Mastic asphalt
3.Bituminous felts
4.Metal sheets
5.Combination of sheets and felts
6.Stone
7.Bricks
- Mortar
9.Cement concrete
- Plastic sheets
Selection of material for D.P.C
1.D.P.C. above ground level
- D.P.C material for floor, roofs etc
3.D.P.C material for differential thermal movements
4.D.P.C material for cavity wall
5.Expansion and construction joints
Damp proofing treatment in building
The damp proofing treatment in building broadly divided into various categories listed below
- Treatment of walls
- Treatment to pitched roof
- Treatment of foundation
- Treatment of parapet wall
- Treatment of floors
