Classification of Manual on Municipal Solid Waste Management

Classification of Manual on Municipal Solid Waste Management, Government of India
The solid waste can be classified as per the Manual on Municipal Solid Waste Management, Government of India publication as follows:
ย (i) Domestic/Residential waste: This type of waste is originated from single or multifamily household units. These wastes are generated from the household activitiesย suchย asย cookingย (ashes)ย cleaningย (dust)ย repairsย (residues),ย hobbies (unuseables), redecoration, empty containers, used packets, old clothes, books, papers,ย brokenย glass,ย plasticย items,ย brokenย andย uselessย furniture.
(ii) Municipal waste:ย Municipal waste includes waste resulting from municipal activities and services such as street sweepings, dead animals, market waste and abandoned vehicles.Generally,ย thisย term โMunicipalย Wasteโย isย usedย inย aย wider sense to incorporate domestic wastes, institutional wastes and commercial wastes.
(iii) Commercial waste:ย Thisย categoryย includesย solidย wastesย thatย originateย in offices, wholesale and retail markets, restaurants, hotels, warehouses (godowns) andย otherย commercialย establishments.
(iv) Institutional waste: These are those wastes generated from institutions such as schools, colleges, universities,ย hospitalsย andย researchย institutes.ย Some of these wastes (like hospitals) may be hazardousย (moreย bad,ย offensive,ย strong, disease producing)ย waste.
(v) Garbage:ย Garbageย isย theย termย appliedย toย animalย andย vegetableย wastesย generatedย fromย theย handling,ย storage,ย sale,ย preparation,ย cookingย andย servingย of food.ย Suchย wastesย containย putrescibleย (easilyย andย quicklyย biodegradedย with bad smell) organic matter. This attracts rats, flies, mosquito and other vermin, thatย isย whyย itย requiresย immediateย attention.
(vi) Rubbish: It is a general term applied to solid wastes originating in households, commercialย establishmentsย andย institutionsย excludingย garbageย andย ashes.
(vii)Ashes: These are the residues from the burning of wood, coal, charcoal, coke andย otherย combustibleย matterย forย cookingย andย heatingย inย housesย institutions andย smallย industries.ย Whenย producedย inย largeย quantitiesย inย thermalย power plantsย (flyย ash)ย theyย areย knownย asย industrialย wastes.ย Ashes consistsย ofย fine powdery residue, cinders and clinkers often mixed with small pieces of metal andย glass.
(viii)Bulky waste:ย Bulkyย wastesย areย largeย householdย wastesย thatย cannotย be accomodated in the normal storage containers of the household and thus they require special collection. Actually in India there is hardly any waste collected inย thisย categoryย asย itย isย soldย toย theย kabaries.
(ix)Street sweepings:ย Theย wasteย collectedย fromย streets,ย walkways,ย parksย etc.ย is known as street sweepings. In developing countries like our country manual street sweeping is done and it makes the largest portion of the municipal solid wasteย asย weย areย inย aย habitย ofย throwingย everythingย onย theย streets.ย Itย includes mainlyย dust,ย dirt,ย plasticย bagsย (thin),ย dryย leaves,ย uselessย papers,ย cardboard, rags,ย tyres,ย vegetableย matterย etc.ย Inย ourย countryย mostย ofย theย usableย portion ofย theย wasteย likeย rags,ย paper,ย thickย plasticย bags,ย plasticย utensils,ย anyย formย of metal is collected by the rag pickers. The organic matter including the paper andย evenย plasticย sheetsย isย consumedย byย cowsย andย otherย strayย animals.ย Only inย bigย citiesย orย theย developedย countriesย theyย formย theย partย ofย waste.ย Thatย is why the calorific value of Indian solid waste is far less in comparison to the otherย countries.
(x) Dead animals: This term includes the dead animals that die naturally or by accidents on roads. It does not include the animal parts from slaughter houses which are regarded as industrial waste. There are two types of dead animals, largeย andย small.ย Theย smallerย onesย likeย dogsย catsย rabbits,ย ratsย etc.,ย areย either consumed by the other animals or can be easily lifted and disposed. The large ones like cows, horses, camels etc. require special and immediate attention as trafficย isย affectedย andย theyย emitย foulย smell.
(xi)Constructionย andย demolitionย waste: These are the wastes generated by the residueย ofย theย construction,ย refurnishment,ย repairย andย demolitionย ofย houses, commercialย buildingsย andย otherย structures.ย Generally, theย demolitionย waste isย usedย byย theย contractorsย inย fillingย lowย lyingย areasย andย theย plinthย fillingย of newย housesย andย nothingย isย leftย onย theย sites.ย Evenย thenย someย smallย quantity ofย sand,ย stoneย orย concreteย mayย beย left.
(xii)Industrial wastes: Theย discardedย solidย materialย ofย manufacturingย processes andย industrialย operationsย comesย inย thisย category.ย Thereย isย aย vastย rangeย of substances that are unique for each industry so they are considered separately fromย municipalย wastes.

(xiii)Hazardous waste:ย Hazardous wasteย isย definedย asย wastesย ofย industrial, instutionalย orย consumerย originย that,ย becauseย ofย theirย physical,ย chemicalย or biologicalย characteristicsย areย potentiallyย dangerousย toย humanย beingsย andย the environment. In some cases the active agents may be liquid or gaseous, they areย classifiedย asย solidย wasteย becauseย theyย areย confinedย inย solidย containers.
Typicalย examplesย areย solvents,ย paints,ย andย pesticidesย whoseย spentย (empty) containersย areย frequentlyย mixedย withย municipalย wastesย andย becomeย partย of theย urbanย wasteย stream.ย Certainย hazardousย wasteย canย explodeย inย theย incineratorsย (controlledย largeย kilns)ย andย causeย firesย atย landย fillย sites.ย Othersย such asย pathologicalย (diseaseย producing)ย wastesย fromย hospitalsย andย radioactive waste,ย requireย specialย handlingย atย allย times.ย Properย managementย practice shouldย ensureย thatย hazardousย wastesย areย collected,ย stored,ย transportedย and disposedย offย seprately,ย preferablyย afterย treatmentย toย makeย themย harmless.
(xiv)Sewageย waste:ย Theย solidย by-productsย ofย sewageย treatment ย areย classifiedย as sewageย wastes.ย Theyย areย mostlyย organicย andย producedย fromย theย treatment ofย organicย sludgeย fromย bothย theย rawย andย treatedย sewage.ย Theย inorganic fractionย ofย rawย sewageย suchย asย gritย isย separatedย atย theย preliminaryย stageย of treatment, but because it entrains putrescible organic matter that may contain disease producing bacteria (pathogens), must be buried or disposed off quickly.
