Types of Concrete Admixtures in Construction Works
Here some Chemical types of Concrete Admixtures mostly used in construction field listed out below.
1. Plasticizers (water reducers)
Plasticizers are materials added in the concrete to improve the workability. 15 % of water reductions are possible when plasticizers are used. Eg:- lignosulphates, polyglycol ester, carbohydrates.
2. Super plasticizer
These are improved version of plasticizer. These permit reduction of water upto 30% without reducing workabil6ity in concrete. These are used in flooring, self compacting and for production of HS and HP concrete. Super plasticizer can produce at the same w/c ratio but more workable concrete. It can also produce for the same workability it permits the use of lower w/c ratio.
Eg: sulphated melamine formaldehyde condensates and sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde condensates.

3. Retarders
This is an admixture used to slow down the hydration process so that concrete remains plastic and workable for a long time. Eg: – CaSo, sugar, starch, cellulose products. Retarders are used for delaying the setting time of concrete without affecting the ultimate strength.
4. Accelerators
These admixtures are added to concrete to increase the rate of early strength development in concrete. These accelerators are used to advance or speed up the setting time.
Eg: – CaCl,, soluble carbonates, silicates.
5. Air-entraining admixture
Air entrainment means mixing of a smooth quantity of air entraining agent in concrete. These include millions of air bubbles which act as flexible bar bearings and modify the properties of plastic concrete to improve workability and finishing quality of concrete. It reduces segregation and bleeding.
