  1. Nominal Mixes

Inย  theย  pastย  theย  specificationsย  forย  concreteย  prescribedย  theย  proportionsย  ofย  cement,ย  fineย  andย  coarse aggregates.ย  Theseย  mixesย  ofย  fixedย  cement-aggregateย  ratioย  whichย  ensuresย  adequateย  strengthย  are termedย  nominalย  mixes.ย  Theseย  offerย  simplicityย  andย  underย  normalย  circumstances,ย  haveย  aย  marginย  of strengthย  aboveย  thatย  specified.ย  However,ย  dueย  toย  theย  variabilityย  ofย  mixย  ingredientsย  theย  nominalย  concrete forย  aย  givenย  workabilityย  variesย  widelyย  inย  strength.

  1. Standard mixes

Theย  nominalย  mixesย  ofย  fixedย  cement-aggregateย  ratioย  (byย  volume)ย  varyย  widelyย  inย  strengthย  andย  may resultย  inย  under-ย  orย  over-richย  mixes.ย  Forย  thisย  reason,ย  theย  minimumย  compressiveย  strengthย  hasย  been includedย  inย  manyย  specifications.ย  Theseย  mixesย  areย  termedย  standardย  mixes.

ISย  456-2000ย  hasย  designatedย  theย  concreteย  mixesย  intoย  aย  numberย  ofย  gradesย  asย  M10,ย  M15,ย  M20,ย  M25,M30, M35ย  and M40.ย  In thisย  designation theย  letter Mย  refers toย  the mixย  and theย  number toย  the specified 28ย  dayย  cubeย  strengthย  ofย  mixย  inย  N/mm2.ย  Theย  mixesย  ofย  gradesย  M10,ย  M15,ย  M20ย  andย  M25ย  correspond approximatelyย  toย  theย  mixย  proportionsย  (1:3:6),ย  (1:2:4),ย  (1:1.5:3)ย  andย  (1:1:2)ย  respectively.

  1. Designed Mixes

Inย  theseย  mixesย  theย  performanceย  ofย  theย  concreteย  isย  specifiedย  byย  theย  designerย  butย  theย  mixย  proportions areย  determinedย  byย  theย  producerย  ofย  concrete,ย  exceptย  thatย  theย  minimumย  cementย  contentย  canย  beย  laid down.ย  Thisย  isย  mostย  rationalย  approachย  toย  theย  selectionย  ofย  mixย  proportionsย  withย  specificย  materialsย  in mindย  possessingย  moreย  orย  lessย  uniqueย  characteristics.ย  Theย  approachย  resultsย  inย  theย  productionย  of concreteย  withย  theย  appropriateย  propertiesย  mostย  economically.ย  However,ย  theย  designedย  mixย  doesย  not serveย  asย  aย  guideย  sinceย  thisย  doesย  notย  guaranteeย  theย  correctย  mixย  proportionsย  forย  theย  prescribed performance.

Forย  theย  concreteย  withย  undemandingย  performanceย  nominalย  orย  standardย  mixesย  (prescribedย  inย  theย  codes byย  quantitiesย  ofย  dryย  ingredientsย  perย  cubicย  meterย  andย  byย  slump)ย  mayย  beย  usedย  onlyย  forย  veryย  smallย  jobs, whenย  theย  28-dayย  strengthย  ofย  concreteย  doesย  notย  exceedย  30ย  N/mm2.ย  Noย  controlย  testingย  isย  necessary relianceย  beingย  placedย  onย  theย  massesย  ofย  theย  ingredients.
