Urgent Requirement for Surat Metro (GC) Project
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is developing the mass transit system (MRTS) known as Surat Metro, which consists of 37 stations, two lines, and will serve Surat, Gujarat’s second-largest city.
The Gujarat state government approved the DPR (Detailed Project Report) for the Surat Metro Phase 1 project in January 2017, and the cabinet of the Central Government approved it in March 2019. The network has a length of 40.35 km. The DPR’s PDF can be seen here.
After the August 2023 deadline, the first section of the Surat Metro is expected to be finished and open in August 2024. In 2027, Phase 1 is expected to be finished.
The finalized route for the Surat Metro Phase 1 project measures 41.93 kilometers. The majority of the project’s funding will come from equity from the governments of India and Gujarat, split 50/50, as well as loans from AFD (€250 million) and KfW (unknown), with whom GMRC has been in talks since 2018.
Phase 1 of Surat Metro’s pre-construction began in the first quarter of 2021.
