{"id":1000,"date":"2016-10-16T09:14:24","date_gmt":"2016-10-16T03:44:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onlinecivilforum.com\/site\/?p=1000"},"modified":"2022-12-13T11:52:19","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T06:22:19","slug":"importance-of-foundations-and-pile-cap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onlinecivilforum.com\/site\/importance-of-foundations-and-pile-cap\/","title":{"rendered":"Importance of Foundations and Pile Cap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Foundations<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Foundations\u00a0provide support for structures, transferring their load to layers of soil or rock that have sufficient bearing capacity and suitable settlement characteristics.<\/li>\n<li>Very broadly,\u00a0foundations\u00a0can be categorised as shallow\u00a0foundationsor deep\u00a0foundations.<\/li>\n<li>Shallow foundations\u00a0are typically used where the loads imposed by a structure are low relative to the bearing capacity of the surface soils.<\/li>\n<li>Deep foundationsare necessary where the bearing capacity of the surface soils is insufficient to support loads imposed and so they are transferred to deeper layers with higher bearing capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PILE CAP<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A\u00a0pile cap\u00a0is a thick\u00a0concretemat that rests on concrete or timber piles that have been driven into soft or unstable ground to provide a suitable stable foundation.<\/li>\n<li>It usually forms part of the\u00a0foundation\u00a0of a building, typically a multi-story building, structure or support base for heavy equipment.<\/li>\n<li>The cast\u00a0concrete\u00a0pile cap distributes the load of the building into the\u00a0piles.<\/li>\n<li>A similar structure to a pile cap is a &#8220;raft&#8221;, which is a concrete foundation floor resting directly onto soft soil which may be liable to\u00a0subsidence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NEED FOR PILE CAP<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pile foundation is required when the soil bearing capacity is not sufficient for the structure to withstand. This is due to the soil condition or the order of bottom layers, type of\u00a0<u>loads<\/u>on foundations, conditions at site and operational conditions.<\/li>\n<li>A pile foundation consists of two components: Pile cap and single or group of piles. Piles transfers the loads from structures to the hard strata, rocks or soil with high bearing capacity.
