A total station is a combination of an electronic theodolite, an electronic distance measuring device (EDM) and a micro processor with memory unit. This combination makes possible to determine the coordinates of a reflector aligning the instruments cross hairs on the reflector and simultaneously measuring the vertical and horizontal angles and slope distances. A micro processor in the instrument takes care of recording, readings and the necessary computation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Advantages Of Total Station<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quick setting of the instrument on the tripod using laser plummet.<\/li>\n<li>On- board area computation programme to compute the area of the field.<\/li>\n<li>Local language support.<\/li>\n<li>Full GIS creation(using mapinfo software).<\/li>\n<li>Automation of old maps.<\/li>\n<li>Greater accuracy in area computation.<\/li>\n<li>Graphical view of plots and land for quick<\/li>\n<li>Integration of data base.<\/li>\n<li>The area computation at any user required scale.<\/li>\n<li>The field jobs are finished, the map of the area with dimensions is ready after data transfer<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s reduce the time &amp; also it\u2019s measure up to 3 to 5 Km distance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Disadvantages Of Total Station<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It may be difficult for the surveyor to look over and check the work while surveying.<\/li>\n<li>the instrument is costly.
