In all these cases the basic ingredients of concrete are the same, but it is their relative proportioning that makes the difference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Basic Ingredients of Concrete: &#8211; <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cement \u2013 It is the basic binding material in concrete.<\/li>\n<li>Water \u2013 It hydrates cement and also makes concrete workable.<\/li>\n<li>Coarse Aggregate \u2013 It is the basic building component of concrete.<\/li>\n<li>Fine Aggregate \u2013 Along with cement paste it forms mortar grout and fills the voids in the coarse aggregates.<\/li>\n<li>Admixtures \u2013 They enhance certain properties of concrete e.g. gain of strength, workability, setting properties, imperviousness etc<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Concrete needs to\u00a0be designed for certain properties\u00a0in the plastic stage as\u00a0 well\u00a0 as\u00a0in the hardened stage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Properties desired from concrete in plastic stage: &#8211; <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Workability<\/li>\n<li>Cohesiveness<\/li>\n<li>Initial set retardation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Properties desired from concrete in hardened stage: &#8211;\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strength<\/li>\n<li>Imperviousness<\/li>\n<li>Durability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Concrete mix design is the method of correct proportioning of ingredients of concrete, in order to optimise the above properties of concrete as per site requirements.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, we determine the relative proportions of ingredients of concrete to achieve desired strength &amp; workability in a most economical way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages of mix design<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mix design aims to achieve good quality concrete at site economically.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Quality concrete means <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Better strength<\/li>\n<li>Better imperviousness and durability<\/li>\n<li>Dense and homogeneous concrete<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Economy <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>a) Economy in cement consumption <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is possible to save up to 15%\u00a0 of cement for M20\u00a0grade of concrete with the help of concrete mix design.\u00a0 In fact higher the grade of concrete more are the savings. Lower cement content also results in lower heat of hydration and hence reduces shrinkage cracks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>b) Best use of available materials: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Site conditions often\u00a0 restrict\u00a0the quality and\u00a0 quantity\u00a0of ingredient materials. Concrete mix design offers a lot of flexibility on type of aggregates to be used in mix design.
