The tens of thousands of panels generate on average slightly more than the roughly 48,000-50,000 kilowatts of power that the airport the seventh busiest in India uses per day.The big project cost around 620 million rupees ($9.3 million), a sum the airport expects to save in less than six years by not having to pay electricity bills anymore. It also estimates the solar plant will avoid more than 300,000 metric tons of carbon emissions from coal power over the next 25 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"row-title\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinecivilforum.com\/site\/burj-khalifa-world-records\/\" aria-label=\"\u201cBurj Khalifa World Records\u201d (Edit)\">Burj Khalifa World Records<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Cochin International Airport, which is the first\u00a0 in\u00a0India developed under\u00a0 a\u00a0 public-private partnership model, first dipped its toes into the solar power waters in 2013 when it built a 100 kilowatt peak (kWp)\u00a0 rooftop\u00a0 photovoltaic\u00a0 (PV) plant on its arrivals terminal. This was followed by a 1 MWp PV plant that was split between the rooftop\u00a0 and\u00a0the ground at\u00a0its aircraft maintenance hangar facility.<\/p>\n<p>Now it scaling things up in a big way. Unveiled this week, the new 12 MWp solar plant stretches across 45 acres (18.2 ha) and is made up of more than 46,000 photovoltaic solar panels that are located alongside the cargo terminal.<\/p>\n<p>The airport claims that the power it generates each year would be enough for 10,000 homes.In combination with\u00a0the pre-existing solar plants, the plant is expected to make the airport completely carbon neutral.<\/p>\n<p>The company says the mitigation of carbon emissions over the next 25 years is equivalent to planting three million trees or not driving 750 million mi (1.2 billion km). Al Jazeera reports that the plant took six months to build at a cost of\u00a0 US$10\u00a0 million,\u00a0 with\u00a0the airport expecting to recover that outlay through energy savings within five years. The solar plant is also expected to generate more power than is required to run the airport, which will be connected to the grid\u00a0to allow excess\u00a0power to be\u00a0sold to the state electricity board.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative lines up nicely with the Indian government\u2019s\u00a0 National\u00a0 Solar\u00a0 Mission,\u00a0 which had originally set a target of countrywide in stalled solar capacity of 22 GW by 2022. This has since been upped to 100 GW by 2022, and is slated to\u00a0 include\u00a0 57\u00a0 GW\u00a0 in\u00a0larger ground mounted projects and 40 GW in rooftop solar.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Read
