Dampness presence of moisture in building<\/g>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dampness may be caused by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(a) Ground water<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(b) Rain water and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(c) Leakages from pipes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(a) Dampness due to Ground Water: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

All buildings are founded on soils. Soil holds water for a long\ntime. Sometimes water level may rise and come in contact with foundation.Due to\ncapillary action moisture from ground rises into foundation, floor and even in\nwall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(b) Rain Water: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

May enter the building components due to various reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(i) From wall top:<\/strong> If top of wall is not protected\nwith impervious course like concrete,water can enter the wall and keep it damp\nfor a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(ii) From face of external walls:<\/strong> Splashing of outer\nwall by rain results into moisture entering the wall. Poor plaster coat is the\nmain source of this type of dampness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(iii) Improper fixing of downtake pipes:<\/strong>  If downtake pipes from roof are not properly fixed,\na thin layer of water stagnates near the mouth of downtake pipes. This results\ninto entry of rain water into roof and wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(iv) Improper slopes to roof:<\/strong> In flat roofs, many\ntimes this is the cause for the dampness of roofs. If slope is not given properly,\nwater ponds are formed on the flat roof, which results into entry of water into\nslab. Once water enters the slab it remains for long time creating dampness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(v) Defective construction:<\/strong> Imperfect wall joints,\nimproper slopes to chejja, construction joints in roof etc. cause dampness in\nbuildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(c) Leakage from Pipes: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From over head tanks, pipes are taken over roof and alongthe wall.From bathrooms, toilets and kitchen water is drained out withdifferent types of pipes.The pipes are joined to get required length and turns.Many times water leaks through joints resulting into moisture in buildingcomponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
