The various effects caused due to dampness in\nbuildings mainly results  in  poor \nfunctional  performance,  ugly \nappearance  and structural\nweakness of the buildings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. A damp building creates unhealthy living and\nworking conditions for the occupants <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Presence \nof  damp  condition \ncauses  efflorescence  on \nbuilding surfaces  which  ultimately \nresults  in  the \ndisintegration  of  bricks stones, tiles etc and hence reduction\nof strength <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. It may result in softening and crumbling of plaster\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. It may cause bleaching and flaking of the paint\nwhich results in the  formation  of \ncoloured  patches  on \nthe  wall  surfaces \nand ceilings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. It may result in the corrosion of metals used in\nthe construction of buildings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. The materials used as floor coverings such as tiles\nare damaged because they lose adhesion with the floor bases <\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Timber \nwhen  in  contact \nwith  damp  condition, \ngets  deteriorated due to the\neffect of warping, buckling and rolling of timber <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. All  the  electrical \nfittings  gets  deteriorated, \ncausing  leakage  of electric current with the potential danger\nof a short circuit <\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Dampness \npromotes  the  growth \nof  termites  and \nhence  creates unhygienic\nconditions in buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Dampness \nwhen  accompanied  by \nthe  warmth  and \ndarkness,breeds  the  germs \nof  tuberculosis,  neuralgia, \naute  and  chronis neumatism etc which some times result\nin fatal diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Methods of Damp Prevention<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The following are the precautions to be taken to\nprevent dampness in buildings, before applying the various techniques. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The  site\nshould be located on high ground and well drained soil to safe guard against\nfoundation dampness <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. All  the  exposed \nwalls  should  be \nof  sufficient  thickness \nto safeguard against rain protection (minimum 30cm) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Bricks of superior quality free from defects should\nbe used <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Good quality cement mortar (1:3) should be used to\nproduce definite pattern and perfect bond in the building<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Cornices \nand  string  courses \nshould  be  provided \nto  through rain water away from\nthe walls <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. All  the  exposed \nsurfaces  like  top \nof  walls,  compound \nwalls etc should be covered with water proofing cement plaster <\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Cavity walls are more reliable than solid walls inpreventing<\/g> the dampness<\/p>\n\n\n\n
