{"id":6133,"date":"2019-01-24T10:41:12","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T05:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onlinecivilforum.com\/site\/?p=6133"},"modified":"2022-12-13T11:29:05","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T05:59:05","slug":"alternate-for-fly-ash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onlinecivilforum.com\/site\/alternate-for-fly-ash\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternate for Fly ash"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problems associated with the quality of fly ash do not\nexist in the case of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag GGBFS, as the produce\nis necessarily the outcome of grinding to the required particle size.Thus the\nuse of GGBFS as a mineral admixture should be preferred, despite long leads for\nend users in certain parts of India far from the steel plants.GGBFS sold in India\nis of uniform quality and particle size gradation.For many landmark structures\nsuch as the Burj Dubai (the tallest building in the world in 2009) GGBFS has\nbeen extensively used as a mineral admixture, even though the material is\nimported from other countries, resulting in the landed cost being more than\nthat of cement.This was a conscious decision with a view to obtaining a more durable\nconcrete structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In India the use of GGBFS has been fairly limited, in spite\nof all the&nbsp; technical&nbsp; advantages.The Indian&nbsp; Concrete&nbsp;\nCode&nbsp; permits up&nbsp; to&nbsp;\n70%&nbsp; of&nbsp; cement&nbsp;\nreplacement where GGBFS is used. Technically, the use of GG-BFS is more\neffective only at replacement levels of 50% or more. For a number of structures\nin a port in Andhra Pradesh, typically the M40 concrete mix contained 100 kg of\ncement and 300 kg of GGBFS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Portland&nbsp; Slag&nbsp; Cement&nbsp; (PSC)&nbsp;<\/strong> is&nbsp; also&nbsp; available&nbsp; and useful for ensuring durability of concrete structures. Due to the proximity to steel mills, PSC is generally produced in locations close to steel plants. Here again due to the bulky nature of the product, the transportation cost predominate. Another issue concerning quality of the PSC is the actual percentage replacement while making PSC; this information is not normally displayed on the bags, leaving the user at a disadvantage.
