Important thing to remember in Casting and testing of Cubes to\nbe followed in construction site.For the assessment of compliance of\nready-mixed concrete or site mixed concrete, the point and time of sampling\nshall be at discharge from the producer\u2019s delivery vehicle to pump or site or\ndischarge from mixer respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following steps should be observed: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(a) Check if moulds are cleaned & lightly oiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(b) In assembling the mould for use, the joints between the\nsections of mould shall be thinly coated with mould oil and a similar coating\nof mould oil shall be applied between the contact surfaces of the bottom of the\nmould and the base plate in order to ensure that no water escapes during the\nfilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(c) Ensure angle between adjacent internal faces & between\ninternal faces shall be 90O+ 0.5OC<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(d) Thoroughly remix the sample shovelling into a heap<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(e) Fill the mould with concrete in 50 mm layers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(f) 35 tamps for each of the three layers in 150 mm mould or\nvibrating table<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(g) After filling each layer tamp sides with a wooden mallet\nto expel out any entrapped air<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(h) The workability of concrete at time of filling cubes\nshould be between 75 -100 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(i) Remove surplus concrete & number the moulds for\nidentification & record details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(k) Cover each mould with damp cloth \/ Hessian cloth\nimmediately after initial set. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(l) Store at a place free from vibration. Protect the cube\nmoulds at all times from high \/ low temperatures & driving winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(m) Complete Sampling & cube making certificates or\nrecords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(n) After demoulding the cubes shall be immediately\nsubmerged in clean, fresh water or saturated lime solution and kept there until\ntaken out just prior to test (Temperature 24 to 30oC). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(o) The specimens shall not be allowed to become dry at any\ntime until they have been tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(p) The testing machine may be of any reliable type, of\nsufficient capacity for the tests and capable of applying the load at the rate\nof 14 N\/sq. mm\/minute. The permissible error shall be not greater than \u00b1 2\npercent of the maximum load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(q) The bearing surfaces of the testing machine shall be\nwiped clean and any loose sand or other material removed from the surfaces of\nthe specimen which are to be in contact with the compression platens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(r) The specimen shall be placed in the machine in such a\nmanner that the load shall be applied to opposite sides of the cubes as cast,\nthat is, not to the top and bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(s) Average of three values shall be taken as the\nrepresentative of the batch provided the individual variation is not more than\n\u00b1 15 percent of the average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(u) If failure is observed during the testing of the first\ncube, stop testing the balance two cubes, immediately inform the senior\nauthority of site engg and the supplier of the concrete and test the balance\ntwo cubes in presence of the supplier\u2019s authorized representative and have a\njoint record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(v) The following information shall be included in the\nreport on each test specimen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a) identification mark,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

b) date of test,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

c) age of specimen,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

d) date of casting ,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

e) weight of specimen,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

f) dimensions of specimen,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

g) cross-sectional area,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

h) maximum load,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

j) compressive strength, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

k) appearance of fractured faces of concrete and type of fracture, if these are unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
