Typical coefficients of thermal\nexpansion are 5\u201310 microstrain \u00b0C \u2212 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plastic Shrinkage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This occurs before final set,and is caused by bleeding. As\nwater is lost from the concrete, its volume decreases. Rapid drying from the\nsurface (i.e., faster than bleeding) will cause substantial plastic shrinkage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Drying Shrinkage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The effect of early drying is plastic shrinkage. Drying\nshrinkage is a long-term phenomenon,and occurs when the pore water is lost.Typical\nvalues are 500 microstrain at 28 days at 50% RH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drying&nbsp;&nbsp; shrinkage is associated&nbsp; more&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; with\nloss of water from gel pores(formed in the\ngel during hydration), than with capillary pores that are larger, and are\ninitially occupied by water. Thus, the pastes, which have hydrated more and\nhave a higher proportion of gel pores, will shrink more, for less water loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuous wet curing will cause expansion,continuous drying\nwill cause shrinkage.Sealed curing will just cause autogenous shrinkage.\nAlternate wetting and drying will cause swelling and shrinkage with each cycle,\nwith a net overall shrinkage or swelling effect depending on the mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Carbonation Shrinkage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Carbonation is normally of interest for durability because\nit causes loss of alkalinity, leading to reinforcement&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  corrosion.It does,however,also&nbsp; cause\nsome shrinkage.This shrinkage is &nbsp;closely\nrelated to drying shrinkage, and the combined effect of both will depend on the\nsequence in which they take place (i.e., carbonation during drying or after\nit).
