Curing is essential for durability, and is carried out to retain\nheat and prevent drying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curing has two distinct functions:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1.  To stop the\nconcrete from drying out during hydration. If this occurs, there will be a\nsignificant loss of durability. The damage is normally irreversible. If\nconcrete is dried, the cement grains will form an impermeable layer of\nhydration product around them, and this will prevent any further hydration,\nhowever many times it is wetted again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.  To retain heat at\nthe surface. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This may be done for the following reasons<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

a.  To prevent frost\ndamage (below 5\u00b0C, 40\u00b0F)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

b.  To increase early\nstrength<\/p>\n\n\n\n

c.  To reduce\ntemperature gradients<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While low temperatures will reduce early strength, the\neffect is not permanent if the concrete has not frozen, and it is subsequently\nkept at higher temperatures. Thus, a sample that is kept at 5\u00b0C (40\u00b0F) will not\nfully hydrate (particularly if it contains a pozzolan), but even after several\nmonths it will hydrate further when the temperature is raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because they hydrate more slowly, cements containing\npozzolans and GGBS generally require longer curing. It is therefore essential\nthat these concretes are identified on site, and cured adequately.The\npozzolanic reaction will then create additional hydration products that can\nblock some of the pores between the cement grains, and achieve good durability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some methods of curing are:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Wrap elements\n(e.g., columns) in polythene after removing shutters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Spray with curing membrane\nafter removing shutters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Cover slabs with polythene\n(and pour ground slabs on polythene).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  For heat retention,\nuse polystyrene on the back of shutters (especially, steel ones).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Simply leaving shutters\nin place for a few extra days (especially wooden ones).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  50 mm of sand can work\non slabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Ponding (i.e., forming\na pool on the concrete surface) is by far the most effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note about curing:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Curing is not usually\npriced as a separate item \u2013 this does not mean that no money may be spent on\nit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Make sure that curing\nis applied as soon as possible. A few hours may make a substantial difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Spray-on curing membranes\nare not very effective, and in windy conditions they are often useless.On\ndifficult areas (such as columns) they may, however, be the only option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Remember that PFA, GGBS\nand, especially, CSF need much better curing (often 5 days, rather than 3\ndays).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Permitting the bleed\nwater to dry off will encourage more bleeding, and plastic cracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022  Slabs on ground should\nhave a polythene sheet placed under them, to prevent excessive water absorption\nby dry soils.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
